Routine check-ups & exams

Regular dental check-ups allow us to see if you have any dental problems and helps you keep your mouth healthy. Leaving problems untreated could make them more difficult to treat in the future.

At each dental check-up, we will typically examine your teeth, gums and mouth. We will also ask about your general health and any problems you've had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit. In addition, we may ask about (and give you advice relevant to your dental health) teeth-cleaning habits, your diet, smoking and alcohol use.

After your dental check-up, we will recommend a date for your next visit. The time to your next dental check-up could be as short as 3 months or as long as 1 year. We recall every 6 months. People with good oral health will probably need to attend only once every 6 months but those with more problems will need dental check-ups more often.

X-rays & digital scans

We use start of the art x-ray and digital scanning equipment to help us check for any problems that can be difficult to spot with the naked eye.

This equipment includes the iTero Digital Scanner. iTero looks like a small wand and is a great way of capturing 3D digital images of your mouth quickly and comfortably without any mess or discomfort. We also use iTero with our Invisalign® orthodontic treatment to show you what the end result of your treatment and new smile will look like.

Natural (white composite) fillings

In the past, fillings were made from either gold or a silver-coloured alloy called amalgam.

Although these materials are extremely durable, the main disadvantage is that they don’t match the natural white teeth in appearance. White fillings, also known as composite fillings, are made from tooth-coloured material that restore the appearance of a previously filled tooth, giving your teeth a more natural look.

Using composite is a completely safe procedure, it can be used for new fillings or to replace any old metal fillings to give your teeth a more natural overall appearance.

Amalgam replacement

Amalgam has traditionally been used in dentistry to restore back teeth with fillings and from a functional point of view this has proved quite effective and durable.

Whether it’s for cosmetic considerations or because of an improved property such as bonding to the tooth structure, many people are today opting to replace Amalgam fillings. Contact Dr Rez Dental if you are concerned about your current fillings and we will talk you through your options.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’ and is an artificial tooth that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it a natural tooth shape. Dental crowns address aesthetic needs, restore tooth function and enhance the overall health of your mouth.

Dental crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been damaged or weakened by decay or a very large filling. They can be made of porcelain or gold or a combination of these materials.

A dental crown could be used for a number of other reasons; you may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth, you may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it or a crown may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

Dental Bridges

Besides dental implants, there are two main ways to replace missing teeth. The first is with a removable false tooth or teeth – a partial denture. The second is with a fixed dental bridge.

A dental bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. Dental bridges are usually made of a precious metal base.

If the dental bridge is likely to show, then porcelain is bonded to the base. There are other non-precious metals available to reduce the cost.

A dental bridge can be used to replace missing teeth for several important reasons; your appearance is one reason. Another is that the gap left by a missing tooth can mean greater strain is put on the teeth at either side. A gap can also mean your ‘bite’ is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which may cause both decay and gum disease.

Dentures

Whether you are missing a few, or many of your teeth then dentures could be the solution for you. They can restore your smile and make eating enjoyable once again.

A denture is made from hard-wearing material that mimics the look of teeth and gums to give your mouth a natural appearance.  At Dr Rez Dental we provide excellent bespoke dentures that are constructed using the latest modern techniques and materials.

Correctly fitted dentures are designed to restore your lip support, therefore avoiding that ‘sunken face’ look that can appear following the loss of your teeth.

You will be able to remove your dentures for cleaning, and our hygienist can show you how to best take care of your denture(s) and gums. As always it is important that you take extra care in your hygiene routine to avoid tooth decay and gum disease.

Extractions

Many people have to have a tooth removed at some time in their lives.

There are many reasons we may need to remove a tooth; overcrowding - as part of the teeth straightening treatment it may be necessary to remove teeth, sometimes a tooth may be too badly decayed or damaged to be repaired, gum disease can cause teeth to become so loose that they have to be taken out, some people have to have their wisdom teeth removed, usually because they are growing in the wrong direction and are causing problems.

In many cases, continued tooth ache is a signal that you have a problem that your dentist will need to assess. Prompt attention can usually prevent the need for a tooth extraction.

Mouth Cancer awareness

Mouth cancer can occur in any part of the mouth, including the tongue, lips and throat. Mouth cancers have a higher proportion of deaths per number of cases than many cancers and this is because of late detection. Contact us at once if you notice any abnormal problems or are not sure. Regular dental check ups allow early detection of abnormalities in the mouth.

The Mouth Cancer Foundation is a registered charity that raises awareness of mouth cancers and provides information and support to patients, carers and health professionals.
